How the EFIB works

The management: 

Its mission defined by the AEFE is three, four or five years. It is responsible for all staff, the pedagogical, security and administrative functioning of the establishment. She is accountable to her hierarchical superiors, the Counsellor for Cooperation and Cultural Action at the Embassy of France in Switzerland on the one hand, and the AEFE on the other.

Our Mission & Values

Through the French International School of Bern, you join the AEFE's global network of 580 schools in 139 countries around the world, which promote universal values – tolerance, humanism, equal opportunities, intellectual curiosity, promotion of critical thinking – and which allows for uninterrupted primary and secondary schooling.

The École Française Internationale de Berne (EFIB) is a unique school in Bern. Each year, it welcomes more than 120 students in 10 classes, from kindergarten (3 years old in December) to middle school (11 to 15 years old).

The profile of families attending school is as follows:

  • 45% of French families are expatriates or binationals,
  • 33% of non-French diplomats or expatriate families (Belgium, Canada, Tunisia, Morocco, Mexico, United States, etc.),
  • 22% of families of Swiss diplomats (French education system present throughout the world thanks to the AEFE) and German-speaking Swiss families making this choice for learning French.

The French International School of Bern is

  • Signed with the AEFE (Agency for French Education Abroad), which guarantees uninterrupted schooling, from kindergarten to baccalaureate. The EFIB is the bearer of the AEFE's universal values: tolerance, humanism, equal opportunities, intellectual curiosity, promotion of critical thinking, etc.
  • Approved by the French Ministry of National Education, offers teaching in accordance with the official French curriculum;
  • Authorised by the DIP (Directorate of Public Education) of the Canton of Bern.

The main bodies of the school

The Management Committee: 

The Management Committee, whose members are parents of students elected for 2 years in the General Assembly, are responsible for the proper functioning and finances of the school, which are managed on a daily basis by amanager .

The School Board (CE):

Tripartite body composed of an equal number of ex officio members representing the administration, representatives of the school's staff and representatives of parents and pupils.

The EC is the main body that regulates the organizational, pedagogical and educational issues of our school. It adopts the school project, the internal regulations, the timetables and the school calendar. He gives his opinion and makes suggestions on the functioning of the school and on all issues concerning the life of the school: the reception and care of disabled pupils, school catering, school hygiene, the safety of children, etc.

      The minutes of the school councils can be consulted in the parents' area on the EDUKA platform.

      Every year in October, the elections of the parents' representatives to the School Council take place.

      The other bodies of the school

      The Class Council:

      It takes place in the college and is chaired by the head of the school or by his representative, and meets at least three times a year. It examines pedagogical issues of interest to the life of the class, in particular the methods of organising the pupils' personal work and decides on the individual case of each pupil.

      The class council is composed of the class teachers, the student representative and the parent representative.

      The College Life Council (CVC)

      A citizen body that promotes the involvement of students in the life of their school. Exchanges aimed at improving the functioning of the school and the living conditions of the students are organized there, the EFIB also involves elementary students (CM2) of which two representatives sit on this body.

      When it meets, the CCV may make proposals on the following topics:

      • Organization of schooling and school time
      • Preparation of the school project and the rules of procedure
      • Equipment, catering
      • Organization of personal work and support for students
      • Language and cultural exchanges
      • Student well-being, school climate and promotion of participatory practices
      • Implementation of the artistic and cultural education pathway, the citizen pathway, the future pathway and the health education pathway
