Middle school at the International French School of Berne (ages 11 to 15)
Middle school marks students' entry into secondary education after elementary school.
The college is organized into four levels:
- Sixth grade
- Fifth grade
- The fourth (4ème)
- The third (3ème)
Middle school learning is structured into two pedagogical cycles:
- Cycle 3 (consolidation cycle) unites CM1, CM2 in elementary school and the class of 6e. Its organization naturally fits in with the school-college council that came into effect at the start of the September 2014 school year. In this cycle, the 6e class should enable students to adapt to the organization and living environment of the collège, as well as ensure continuity of the learning undertaken in the CM1 and CM2 classes.
- Cycle 4 (cycle des approfondissements) comprises the 5th, 4th and 3rd grades. During this cycle, students develop their knowledge and skills in various disciplines, while preparing for further education and active participation in the future evolution of society.
When a pupil starts secondary school, he or she discovers all the different aspects: a new timetable, more people to talk to, different working methods. The priority is to ensure a relationship of trust between the school, the student and his or her parents, to help the student find his or her bearings and to support him or her in his or her schooling.
The middle school is a place for training individuals and future citizens. To this end, a great deal of emphasis is placed on education in responsibility, as well as the necessary respect for people, rules and the environment.
School curricula are those of the French Ministry of Education.

Diplôme National du Brevet (D.N.B.)
The diplôme national du brevet assesses the knowledge and skills acquired at the end of secondary school. It is not a prerequisite for promotion to the next grade.
Since the 2017 curriculum reform, the brevet des collèges has evolved in its grading and tests.
- Grading of skills acquired at the end of the third year,
- Written subjects in the final exam: French, mathematics, history-geography and two subjects from among physics-chemistry, technology and life and earth sciences,
- An oral presentation
- The total is scored out of 800 points.
